This rich, eggy, sweet yeast bread exists in almost every Eastern European culture I tried this recipe a few weeks ago at a friends house and got to say i thought it tasted great.. Typically, it’s braided and can be made with or without raisins. Bohemians and Czechs call it houska.
Poles call it chalka, Ashkenazi Jews refer to it as challah. The bread is reminiscent of French brioche and is terrific plain, with butter or toasted. Leftovers are great in bread pudding and makowki. Head over to thekitchn.com below to see how to make your own sweet braided czech bread that you can add almonds and raisins to the recipe for that bit of extra flavor.
