As summer begins to wind down, you may think your vegetable-growing season is almost over. However, experienced gardeners know that late summer and early fall can be some of the best times to sow another round of delicious homegrown vegetables.

With the right crops and a little planning, your garden can continue producing food long after summer favourites such as tomatoes, peppers and beans have finished. Cooler temperatures can even improve the flavour of certain vegetables, making crops such as carrots, kale and parsnips taste sweeter after they have been exposed to light frost.

What you can grow will depend on your local climate and the date of your first expected frost. Gardeners in warmer areas may still have time to plant broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage. Those living in cooler regions can concentrate on faster-growing crops such as radishes, spinach, lettuce, rocket and other salad greens.

Root vegetables, including carrots, beets and rutabagas, can also be excellent choices when planted early enough to mature before the ground freezes. Some hardy vegetables may continue growing through chilly weather, especially when protected with mulch, row covers or a cold frame.

The key is to check how many days each vegetable needs to mature and count backwards from your area’s average first frost date. Starting now gives young plants enough time to become established before temperatures fall.
