French toast roll-ups are a delightful take on a classic breakfast favorite. This recipe combines the comforting flavors of traditional French toast with a creative presentation that’s perfect for a cozy morning meal or a brunch with friends and family.

These roll-ups are not only delicious but also incredibly versatile, allowing you to customize fillings to suit your taste preferences. Whether you prefer a sweet or savory twist, these roll-ups can easily adapt to your desired flavors.

Ingredients:

  • 8 slices of bread (white, wheat, or brioche work well)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Filling options: cream cheese, Nutella, jam, peanut butter, sliced fruits, cooked bacon, or ham
  • 2-3 tablespoons unsalted butter (for cooking)
  • Optional toppings: powdered sugar, maple syrup, fresh fruits, or whipped cream

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Bread Slices:
    • Using a rolling pin, gently flatten each bread slice to make it easier to roll.
    • Trim the crusts off the bread if desired for a cleaner look, but this step is optional.
  2. Create the Filling:
    • Choose your preferred fillings. You can spread a thin layer of cream cheese, Nutella, jam, peanut butter, or place sliced fruits, cooked bacon, or ham on one end of each bread slice.
  3. Rolling Up:
    • Carefully roll up each bread slice, starting from the end with the filling, ensuring it’s tightly rolled to prevent any filling from leaking out during cooking.
    • In a shallow bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon until well combined.
  4. Coating the Roll-Ups:
    • Dip each rolled bread into the egg mixture, ensuring it’s thoroughly coated on all sides.
  5. Cooking:
    • In a non-stick skillet or frying pan, melt butter over medium heat.
    • Place the coated roll-ups seam-side down in the skillet.
    • Cook until all sides are golden brown and slightly crispy, turning them occasionally to ensure even cooking, approximately 2-3 minutes per side.
  6. Serve and Enjoy:
    • Once cooked, transfer the French toast roll-ups to a plate.
    • Optionally, dust with powdered sugar, drizzle with maple syrup, or add fresh fruits or whipped cream as toppings.
    • Serve warm and enjoy the deliciousness!

Tips and Hints:

  • Use day-old bread for better absorption of the egg mixture without becoming too soggy.
  • Experiment with different fillings to find your favorite combination of flavors.
  • Ensure the skillet isn’t too hot to prevent the roll-ups from burning while cooking.
  • You can make a larger batch and freeze the uncooked roll-ups for a quick breakfast option. Just thaw before cooking.
  • If you’re making savory roll-ups, try adding herbs or spices to the egg mixture for extra flavor.

French toast roll-ups offer a delightful and fun way to enjoy breakfast, and with their customizable fillings, they’re sure to become a family favorite. Whether served as a special treat or a regular morning indulgence, these roll-ups are guaranteed to bring smiles to the table!
